City of Columbus

The City of Columbus is located at the intersection of IH-10 and Hwy 71 in Central Texas, between San Antonio and Houston.  Columbus has a population  of just under 4,000 and is the county seat of Colorado County.

Colorado County

Colorado County is located in East Central Texas. Created in 1836, it is one of the original counties established in Texas by Stephen F. Austin. The county possesses the untamed river that is her namesake within her 950-square mile boundary.

The northern region near Frelsburg, with its rolling hills, is reminiscent of Germany's countryside.  Gentle yielding farm fields cover the southern portion in the Garwood and Nada Communities.

The eastern side of our county, with the communities of Bernardo and Mentz, reveals serene prairies that quickly transform into piney woods like that of East Texas.

The west side of the county, in the Weimar area serves as the Gateway to West Texas with its unlimited supply of majestic Live Oaks and the beginning of great open spaces.

The city of Eagle Lake, in the southeastern portion of our county, can boast it is the "Goose Hunting Capital of the World" while the southwestern portion of our county near Sheridan can proclaim the honor of the "Deer Hunting Capital of the World."

Nowhere in this state will you see a county that provides such diversity. Cities include Alleyton, Altair, Bernardo, Columbus, Eagle Lake, Frelsburg, Garwood, Glidden, Mentz, Nada, Oakland, Rock Island, Sheridan, & Weimar.

Colorado County is one of 13 counties in the Gulf Coast Workforce Development Area. Colorado County's 2000 population of 20,390 ranked at 114th in the state. The Manufacturing, Trade, Service, and Local Government Sectors fuel county employment. The average unemployment rate in Colorado County for 2002 was 4.3 percent.
